Is this guy going to get Brad Bates a new job?

This is Todd Turner. He runs a college search firm that places high level athletic personnel, including Athletic Directors. He was also the Athletic Director at Vanderbilt when Brad Bates was there. If you read between the lines, it appears he's helping out his former protege again.

This summer when Turner ran the Athletic Director search for Missouri, he presented Bates as a candidate. Now Blauds is reporting that Bates is in the mix for the San Diego State opening. Guess who is running their search? Yep, it is Todd Turner. (The fact that San Diego State only has an opening because Turner landed their old AD at Mizzou is an entirely different topic altogether.)

Bates could have spun taking the Mizzou job as a step up. It is an SEC school, a flagship state university and more money. San Diego State -- even with BC's current issues -- would be a step back. It is not a Power 5 school and not as big a department. But for Bates it might seem like a nice landing spot given his contract situation. What happens to Bates if BC doesn't extend him and San Diego State doesn't hire him? No big deal. Turner will just float his name for the next search he runs.

Southwest Airlines and Delta Air Lines are scheduled to be back in court Monday in their ongoing legal dispute over gates at Dallas Love Field.

Lakewood Amphitheatre: Atlanta Concert Venue

Lakewood Amphitheatre opened in 1989 and has a seating capacity of 19,000. Despite living in Atlanta these many years, I've only been to Lakewood Amphitheatre a couple times. I've seen Jimmy Buffet, Dave Matthews Band (I think) and Live there. Lakewood has always felt a world away, but it really isn't that bad of a drive […]

Enough.

“So, what's on the agenda for today?” He asks me this question every morning as we get ready… He showers, shaves, gets all handsome and fancy, smelling good in his collared shirts and slacks, while I put on the cleanest pair of yoga pants I can find and brush my teeth quickly before my 4-year-old […]

Chef Ali Mesghali of Rumi's Kitchen talks Persian cuisine

Rumi's Kitchen in Sandy Springs has been a beacon of Persian cuisine on the Atlanta dining scene for the past ten years now, but chef/owner Ali Mesghali has gotten some recent attention beyond our city - he was invited to cook at the James Beard House in New York for a special dinner celebrating the Persian festival of Nowruz.

Mesghali actually opened his first Persian restaurant, Shamshiri, in 1998, which was followed by Persepolis in 2000, and then Rumi's Kitchen in 2006. In the past year, though, chef Mesghali has been introducing a new set of dishes to his loyal patrons, dishes that reflect the current embrace of Middle Eastern cuisines happening from the Beard House on down to home kitchens filled with new cookbooks inspired by the region.

The well-established staples at Mesghali's restaurants have long been undeniably appealing - flavorful kabobs, intricately spiced rice dishes.…

Vin 25 Wine Bar and Restaurant, Roswell GA Restaurant Review

Tucked on a quiet neighborhood street in Roswell, Vin 25 seems like a secret oasis Roswellites keep to themselves. I can't blame them. It was a warm spring day when I visited Vin 25, the kind you relish, knowing that they are few and far between in Hotlanta. Although Vin 25 is has a beautiful […]

Rooting Guide for NCAA Tournament

Everyone's filling out a bracket right now. Experts and idiots alike all think they know who is going to win. But who do you actually want to win? Who do you hope makes a nice run. Obviously you can't root for BC. However, this year there isn't even a good BC-related angle to the Big Dance. BC guy Mark Schmidt and his St. Bonaventure team saw their bubble burst. BC alum Bruce Pearl didn't turn Auburn around yet. No Steve Donahue or Al Skinner guys snuck in with their mid-majors. It is slim pickings. Plus all our enemies seem to be there. Duke and Notre Dame got favorable draws. Holy Cross is dancing! Teams that have knocked us out of tournaments like USC and Villanova are there. UConn too. There is nothing to like. But here is how I am looking at things.

-- Providence. The Friars remains a basketball rival, but I can't root against Ed Cooley. He did great things at BC and probably should have been hired as Head Coach. It would be nice to see him make a run.

-- All ACC teams. It is hard for me to flip the switch and go from hating to liking an ACC team just because of the tournament. But seeing our conference mates advance does help BC. It makes the conference stronger which brings in more money and excites more recruits.

-- Gonzaga and St. Joseph's. People root for mascots or uniforms. Why not root for other Jesuits? People wonder if BC cares about sports. Seeing other Jesuit schools using the Tournament as a platform is a good thing. Who knows, maybe our future leaders are now at one of those schools and loves basketball.

Georgia Senate OKs record budget

The Georgia Senate Thursday overwhelmingly adopted a record $23.7 billion state budget for the coming fiscal year.

The budget, which passed 52-3, includes nearly $1 billion in new transportation spending, primarily from the $900 million transportation funding bill the General Assembly passed last year.

Senators also approved 3 percent pay raises for teachers and state employees recommended by Gov. Nathan Deal, with larger increases earmarked for workers in four state agencies that have experienced…
