The Georgia Senate Thursday approved a constitutional amendment asking voters whether the state should be authorized to take over chronically failing public schools.
Voting 38-15 strictly along party lines, the Senate's Republican majority passed GOP Gov. Nathan Deal's signature education legislation of the 2015 General Assembly session. The 38 votes in favor of the measure gave it exactly the two-thirds needed to approve a constitutional change and send the amendment to the state House of Representatives.
