SonoFAST – Improving Ultrasound Examinations

SonoFAST is looking to improve the ultrasound examination experience by replacing the use of messy liquid gel with a disposable polymer pad that fits on any probe. The pad offers minimum friction for more comfortable exams and its acoustic transmittance properties results in images that are on par or clearer than that from current options.

The product concept began as a senior project that went on to win the People’s Choice award at the Georgia Tech Capstone Design Expo in April 2014. The  interdisciplinary team comprised of Keller Tomassi, Gabriela Lamas, Stephanie Camstra and Jorge Mena, caught the startup bug and went on to enroll in the rigorous 2014 Startup Summer program at Georgia Tech.

The company was officially incorporated in October 2014. Tomassi and Mena are working on SonoFAST full-time while Lamas and Camstra are working on it on a part-time basis while holding full-time corporate positions.

“Currently there are members on the team that juggle a full-time corporate job and the startup life. Even though this can be challenging, it is a reality for those of us in the startup space,” said Gabriela Lamas, co-founder and vice president of customer development at SonoFAST.

While still in college, two of theSonoFAST Team 2015 founders worked at emergency rooms in hospitals and noticed that the cleaning of ultrasound probes was often overlooked due to the fast-paced environment. More than 100 hours of clinical observations by team members confirmed that this initial observation was not an isolated incident.

SonoFAST has since added a fifth member to its team and the company is currently seeking investors to help fund the FDA clearance process and expand its patent portfolio.
